“Gangster” and “Idhayam” from Billa 2.
You’re in killer shape. Is music a motivator at the gym?
I don’t just workout in the gym, but, being a martial artist and a trained gymnast, I train every morning. Fitness has actually been a way of life for me ever since I can remember. I’ve been exposed to and have trained in various forms of physical activities from martial arts to free running and strength building since I was three years old. When in the gym, I sure do enjoy the peppy, energetic music that can be part of my workout tone.
Routine: I train every single day. In a week, I follow 5 days of martial art training and 2 days of weight training. The martial arts routine comprises of gymnastics, acrobatics, street stunts, and tricking. Weight training includes extensive lower body training, squats, lunges, calves along with upper body workout that includes roman rings, parallel bars, and push ups. I focus a lot on lower body workouts especially – legs and calves with squats and jumps. A lot of people who weight train tend to focus more of the upper body than the lower not realizing that the entire body needs to be strengthened for it to operate at its best.
Break time: Even though I train everyday, I don’t follow a strict set regimen. I follow what my heart and what my body says and do what I want to – be it gymnastics, martial arts, or weight training. The days I feel like my body needs a break, I do take one as well.
Meal plan: I don’t just have three meals. I eat at regular intervals. I’m a vegetarian and I eat as and when I feel hungry. I start my day with a litre of water followed by breakfast that comprises of white oats with muesli, fruits (especially kiwi), along with skimmed milk. Being a vegetarian, tofu for me is a large source of protein. I ensure I eat enough carbs, sugars, salts as well in the required amount as all of it is what the body needs. I believe in listening to my body as it’s the body that ultimately needs the energy to perform. Also, hydrating the body at regular intervals with enough water is also very important.
Who are your favorite recording artists/music directors, in any language?
I actually listen to tracks that span a wide range depending on my mood, from Hindi music by the likes of Vishal Shekhar, Amit Trivedi, Sneha Khanwalkar, along with tracks by Swedish House Mafia, Skrillex, Dead Mau, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Linkin Park to name just a few.
What does music mean to you?
I know this maybe quite an unexpected response but for me every sound around me can make music. It could be the consistent sound of the waves when I’m working out on the beach or even the sound of feet tapping when people around you are running on the park tracks. There is a pattern and a rhythm to every sound that surrounds you and that’s the start for every musical note and every track. Sometimes even an offbeat makes a beat, it’s just a matter of aligning yourself to it and flowing with it.
Tell us a little bit about the music of Commando. Which tracks should we have on repeat?
Commando’s soundtrack has 4 songs, all quite distinct from each other. Lutt Jawan which is a peppy dance track which combines the beats of hip hop with a Punjabi flavour, Saawan Bairi which a soulful romantic song sung so beautifully by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Sahab. That song has the ability of taking you into a whole other world and making you live in that eternal space. Then we have an item song Mungda featuring Nathalia Kaur and a fun and energetic Punjabi song Lena Dena sung by Daler Mehendi. Mannan Shah, our music director has done such a great job with the tracks and given that this is a high octane action film, a soundtrack like this seems very befitting.
Are there any other messages you’d like to share with Saavn’s listeners today?
Commando releases on April 12. I would request all Saavn listeners to tune into the album on Saavn and catch the film at a theatre near you!
Model Behavior
We’re starting the week off on the right foot. Model-actress-singer and Miss World Tourism Sonal Chauhan, who stars in this Friday’s 3G, is sharing her picks with Saavn listeners today. Check out Sonal’s choice for Song of the Day and her handpicked workout tracks, Sonal’s Gym Playlist, only on Saavn. We had a chance to chat a little more with Sonal about her music obsessions. Her message for us? “Music and food is my ‘pick me up,’ so I’m really excited about getting to share my favourites with you today!”
Here’s the full transcript of our intreview with Sonal:
Sonal, we’re so excited to have you as our celebrity guest editor, especially since you will be our first ever actress-singer! Thank you for sharing your picks with Saavn’s listeners today. What is your editorial choice for Saavn’s Song of the Day (Hindi) today, and why is this your pick?
Well it has to be from my movie 3G - “Kaise Bataoon.” It was my first time recording a song, so I am a bit biased, but it is also a beautiful song. I am all about falling in love and this song captures that emotion perfectly. It’s about loving someone but not knowing how to tell them because words fail you. It’s so simple and so beautiful.
What’s your editorial playlist to be featured on Saavn today, and why did you choose to share these tracks?
Sonal’s Gym Playlist
“Lat Lag Gayee” from Race 2
“Tu Mera Hero” from Desi Boyz
“Mein Sharabi” from Cocktail
“Tum Hi Ho Bandhu” from Cocktail
“Hookah Bar” from Khiladi 786
“Pungi” from Agent Vinod
“Khalbali” from 3G
You’ve made your singing debut with “Kaise Bataaon” from 3G and we’re impressed! Are you a trained singer? How did this recording come about? Can you tell us more about your studio experience?
I love music; I have always been very passionate about it, but I have never been trained. You will always hear me singing something or the other. Singing makes me happy; music is my stress buster . So even on set, when we were in between shots, I would sing once in a while and my directors heard me. A few days later they called me and told me that they want me to come into the studio and record the song because they haven’t been able to find the right person the match it. I thought they were joking, but then, next thing I knew, I was at the studio and was a nervous wreck. But Mithoon was very encouraging. He told me to just let go and have fun. I did just that.
Do you have plans to record more music?
Never say never
. I never thought I would record a song, especially for my own movie . I love singing, and with the right guidance…you never know.
Who are your favorite recording artists/music directors?
Mithoon, Amit Trivedi, Pritam.
Are there any songs, singers, or music directors you keep coming back to? When do you find yourself drawn to these?
Mithoon’s music is addictive; there is a simplicity to his melodies and it’s always so soothing, yet so deep, like “Maula Mere Maula.” I also love “Tu Mera Hero.” There’s something about that song…I could be exhausted, but the minute that song starts playing, I have to get up and dance!
Are there any other messages you’d like to share with Saavn’s listeners today?
Saavn is a fantastic initiative and I am very excited to work with you. I am a music freak; I always have something or the other playing in the background. Music and food is my “pick me up,” so I’m really excited about getting to share my favourites with you today!
Rise of the VJ
This weekend, Saavn’s got a special treat for you: former Channel V VJ-dancer-critic-musician-producer-director-actor (whew!) Luke Kenny is guest editing our Hindi and English homepages. You can check out Luke’s picks for Song of the Day in Hindi and Song of the Day in English (for our India-based listeners only), along with his specially-selected featured playlists for Saavn Hindi and Saavn English.
We had a chance to chat with Luke, who is revving up for the release of his next film, Rise of the Zombie, later this month. His message for Saavn’s listeners? “Be strong; be true; follow your heart in whatever you do.” (Yes, Luke’s a poet who doesn’t know it.) From all of us at Saavn, good luck with RotZ, Luke! We can’t wait for India’s first zombie origin film.
Here’s the full transcript of our interview with Luke:
Luke, we’re so excited to have you as our celebrity guest editor, especially since you will be our first ever for Saavn English! Thank you for sharing your picks with Saavn’s listeners today. What is your editorial choice for Saavn’s Song of the Day (Hindi) today, and why is this your pick?
I am going to be selfish here and choose “Dil Pukaare” from my film Rise of the Zombie, written by my friend Ankur Tewari and sung by Arfaaz Kagalwala. its a lovely composition and has a very uplifting soul to it. Perfect for a long drive song.
What is your editorial choice for Saavn’s Song of the Day (English) today, and why is this your pick?
Again, it’s a song from RotZ. It’s the title song, “Zombie,” written and sung by me. I wanted to pay homage to one of the greatest pop songs ever written, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” And since the film is a zombie film and “Thriller” also has a zombie theme to the video, the inspiration worked perfectly.
What’s your editorial playlist to be featured on Saavn Hindi today, and why did you choose to share these tracks?
Luke Ke Dhun:
“Jaag Uthi Hai Yeh Raat” (Suraj Jagan) – From my film RotZ. It’s a superbly written song with amazing lyrics. and it fits the soul of my film perfectly
“Tanhayee” (Aditi Singh Sharma) – This is her first original song for a Hindi film. Sung amazingly, and it’s all her own original composition.
“Phir Dekhiye” (Caralisa Monteiro) – A fantastic song by a fantastic voice, and astounding lyrics.
“Muskaane Jhoothi Hai” (Suman Sridhar) – From the film Talaash. Very well arranged and sung.
“Nayan Tarse” (Amit Trivedi) – From Dev D. A fab soundrack and a super song; dark, yet delicious.
What’s your editorial playlist to be featured on Saavn English today, and why did you choose to share these tracks?
Lukebox:
“Billie Jean” (Michael Jackson) – The song that changed my life.
“We Are Young” (FUN) - An anthem to youth no matter how old you are.
“Easy Way Out” (Gotye) – Another good song from the guy who gave us the biggest song of 2012.
“Doom and Gloom” (The Rolling Stones) – A cool song from one of the greatest bands of all time.
“Love…Thy Will Be Done” (Martika) – Written by Prince but beautifully sung by Martika; a gem of a composition.
We know you’ve been playing music from a young age. Can you tell us a little more about your musical background, and what instruments you play?
Well, I play the guitar a bit and can find my way around a keyboard. But [I] am more of a hands-free kinda guy, so I attack the mic with a visciousness whenever I get the chance. My dad did his best to try and teach me guitar, but I could never sit still in one place. So that’s how the singing thing came into being – so, [I] have always been the frontman of the band ever since.
Who are your musical heroes?
Almost everyone on the Saavn database! But seriously, there have been many inspirations from different times in my life, each one opening up a new world of music experience. Be it singing, songwriitng, performance, poetry, etc. each artist has been uniquely influential in my musical journey.
Are there any albums, songs, or musical artists (in any language) you keep coming back to? When do you find yourself drawn to these?
As time goes by, and our lives get more and more cluttered with ringtones and caller tunes and “Gangnam Styles,” and as music gets more and more decimated, I make it point to listen to entire albums from time to time, as they were intended to be. I have a huge collection of music in many formats, and everyday I make it a point to listen to at least one album in entirety.
It could be a particular song that pops into my head that makes me want to pull out that album, or it could be a new artist i’ve just discovered and want to give the music a chance. Or sometimes I just pull out a past album and see if it still resonates as a test for the music.
Who are your favorite artists/music directors working today, whether in India or abroad?
Again, quite a few to name, and each one has many things to offer. So I try and find the uniqueness in each one and hope that they retain that element of surprise each time they create something different.
We love the RotZ soundtrack…there’s an incredible breadth of musical styles incorporated in this one album. Can you tell us more about what went into the music of the film?
I want to send out a message that the time for independent film soundtracks is here. We keep talking about the abundance of music talent that there is in the country, so why do we not see more of it getting mainstream support? And why are we afraid to give those very independents their due! So every song on the album has been written and composed by the artists themselves, even down to the lyrics and the production of the song itself. And most importantly, they all retain their publishing ownership.
What tracks from RotZ were written by you? Did you have a lot of input on the other songs, or did you give your co-writers free reign?
“Tripwire,” “Blackbird,” and “Zombie” (Hindi and English versions) are written by me, but “Tripwire” was recorded with my band live in a studio. “Blackbird” and “Zombie” have been arranged and produced by Arfaaz and Anurag, a duo who have done a fabulous job with the arrangements. I did give them a few pointers as to the direction the arrangement should go in and the rest of the blanks were filled in superbly by them.
We’re big fans of origin stories, and of zombie stories. Are you a Romero fan? Have had a chance to read World War Z and/or The Walking Dead? Did you come to this film with a passion for zombie tales, or is your first dip in the pool?
Romero is God! As far as the zombie pop culture phenomenon goes – he gave us the modern zombie, absolutely. And every piece of zombie culture created since is in his debt forever. And as a horror film fan there is no way I could escape them, so, yes, passion is everything with this film.
Actor, director, musician – you’re quite the renaissance man! Does any one of these crafts hold a special place in your heart, or would you rather not choose one? Any future plans in the works that you can share with us (hint: Zombie 2!)?
How about 2 AND 3? Yes, RotZ is the beginning of a trilogy that will roll out over the coming years. It’s chapter one, a simple beginning that will get bloodily complicated as we go along. Now that’s a renaissance to follow, in my opinion.
As a musical person, do you face any special challenges working in film? Or is it the opposite – does your musical ability inform your acting and directing instincts?
Music is all about timing, which then creates the sonic experience that creates for aural entertainment, so also when attached to the visual medium, a similar ethic is applied. After that it all depends on how good an arranger you are, or in this case…storyteller.
What indie artists (that we’ve never heard of) should we be listening to?
A band called Freelance Whales, a singer called Jim Croce, and a composer called Atticus Ross
How has the scene for independent musicians changed in India since you’ve been on it? Do you think it has changed at all? Do you still consider yourself an independent artist?
It has changed considerably thanks to technology. Musicians can now create a finished product on their computers in the comfort of their bedrooms, and release it digitally across various independent sources on the Internet, reaching out directly to listeners. But as easy as it is to be able to do, it is equally difficult to make a living out of it. The backbone of any independent artist remains his or her live performances, and the frequency of which makes the music live and breathe. And if the miracle of mainstream support happens, than we will truly have a utopia of music that stands it own ground on its own merit.
And yes, I will always be an independent artist even if it means having to work for myself for the rest of my life.
Are there any other messages you’d like to share with Saavn’s listeners today?
Be strong; be true; follow your heart in whatever you do.

Reaching for the Stars
We’re excited to announce our new Celebrity Guest Editor program! In a first for any Indian music streaming service, Saavn is inviting celebrities who use Saavn to curate our site and app for a day. Our first Guest Editor is none other than Neil Nitin Mukesh (he of the legendary Bollywood legacy). You can listen to Neil’s picks for Song of the Day and his featured playlist on Saavn.com and on the Saavn Music apps today, January 15th (IST), as Neil celebrates his birthday with Saavn.
We also interviewed Neil in preparation for his Guest Editorship. His message for Saavn’s listeners? “Keep a smile on your face always. It’s a curved line that puts everything straight.” Well said, Neil. From all of us at Saavn, Happy Birthday!
Here’s the full transcript of our interview with Neil:
What is your editorial choice for Saavn’s Song of the Day today, and why is this your pick?
My pick of the day would be my grandfather’s song, “Saavan Ka Mahina.” Beautiful song and specially-dedicated to Saavn. This is the month of my birthday…so the entire month of joy.
What’s your editorial playlist to be featured on Saavn today, and why did you choose to share these tracks?
My love songs for the day are Dil Sambhal Jaa Zara, Teri Meri Meri Teri Prem Kahaani Hai Mushkil, Tune Jo Na Kaha from New York. My favourite current workout track is Duma Dum Mast Kalandar from David; and my party tracks are Fevicol and Maria Pitache. My all-time melodies are Tere Dar Par Sanam, Awaarapan Banjaarapan, So Gaya Yeh Jahan, and Noorie; and my family entertainment songs are Jaane Jaan Dhoondta Raha and Zindagi Khwaab Hai.
Having dabbled in music, what are your musical aspirations, if any?
I compose music. I play the piano and programme as well. I have composed songs for a film of mine, which I will be filming later this year. Being born in the Mukesh family, you cannot take music away from me or for that matter any of the family members.
Are there any albums, songs, or musical artists you keep coming back to? When do you find yourself drawn to these?
I keep going back to Ali Haidar. His album Chahat is my favourite. I also love Junoon; Sonu Nigam’s Ab Mujhe Raat Din; and Pankaj Udhas’s Phir Haath Mein Sharaab Hai.
Who are your favorite artists/music directors working today?
We have some great musicians today. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Sonu Nigam, Vishal-Shekhar, Sneha Khanwalkar, Amit Trivedi, Pritam, Mickey McCleary, Kailash Kher, Gaurav Daas Gupta, Rekha Bharadwaj, Sunidhi, Shreya Ghoshal, Mohit Chauhan, and many more…We have some incredible talent. I can go on and on.
What are your favorite recordings by your father and grandfather?
All of them. And this I say without being biased. But at the same time my grandfather’s
“Zindagi Khwaab Hai,” “Raat Aur Din,” “Ek Din Bij Jaayega,” and “Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan.” My father’s are “So Gaya Yeh Jahan,” “Noorie,” “Yeh Paisa Bolta Hai,” and “Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni.”
Your upcoming release, David, has a unique plot structure and album structure, with 8 different composers working on the music. What tracks should we be excited about, and why?
It’s a great mix of some brilliant music. Remo’s “Maria Pitache”, Mickey McCleary’s “Duma Dum Mast Kalandar,” Anirudh’s “Yun Hi Re,” and Maatibaani’s “Tore Matware Naina” stand out for me. Reason being the pure melody and the class of music they are. Having said this, I must also agree on the fact that all the tracks are brilliant.
From all of your own films, what are your favorite tracks, and why?
It’s not fair to ask me my favourite songs from my own films. I love them all. Johnny Gaddaar, Aa Dekhen Zara, New York, Jail, Lafangey Parindey, Saat Khoon Maaf, Players, David. I love them all. But my constant hearing list is “Tune Jo Na Kaha,” “Mann Lafanga Bada,” and Johnny Gaddaar’s entire album.
As a musical person, do you face any special challenges working in film? Or is it the opposite – does your musical ability inform your acting instincts?
I can only say one thing. And that is that every actor should know music, and learn any one instrument. It really helps to understand “sur” rhythm. Helps you emote better and understand a graph of emotions. Helps in diction and to an extent of learning your lines
Do you have any involvement in the music of your own films?
Yes. I do take a keen interest in the music aspect of films and, without interference, like to sit watch and learn. On the future, like I said before, I have composed songs for a film of mine. To be filmed yet.
Are there any other messages you’d like to share with Saavn’s listeners today?
Keep a smile on your face always. It’s a curved line that puts everything straight.
A Good Year
Many of you already know about our whirlwind partnership with Facebook (we love you, FB). We were among their first Open Graph partners when they launched the platform last year. It’s been an incredible journey for us…and today, we made it onto their blog! Let’s just say it has to do with Saavn’s, ahem, explicit nature.
Here’s some of what they had to say about Saavn:
“The India-based mobile and desktop app has experienced exponential growth since launching in December of last year, powering active Facebook-connected users in more than 200 countries. Saavn has generated nearly 2.3 billion impressions, daily referral traffic from Facebook has grown 30x and monthly music streams have grown by over 200%.”

Ek Tha Tiger Roars in Tanzania!
It’s no surprise that South Asian music buffs across the world listen to music on Saavn – there are tons of us dispersed over India, Pakistan, the USA, the UK, Singapore, etc. But what’s kind of amazing is that people in 219 different countries and territories are jamming to Saavn.
Yeah…219! And if seeing is believing, here you go:
Our resident hackers, Arpan and Clint, cooked up our latest feature, the song map, by combining the power of ever increasing amounts of data-logs, Yahoo! Geo APIs, and Google Maps + jQuery trickery. We would also like to thank the business guys for not getting in the way
.
Be warned, it’s a little addictive! Many co-workers have spent hours trying to play rare songs looking for themselves on the map – try for yourself. Discover cool songs being heard in a distant part of the world. Or simply be wowed by the global power of Bollywood.
Enjoy!
Tip – Check out the feature late at night and come across unheard-of places on our diverse planet.
Happy Ending
When we launched Saavn Music for Android, users on slower networks, especially users in India, reported streaming issues. In order to make the majority of Saavn mobile listeners happy, we rolled out a rapid fix: variable bitrates. With our original variable bitrate feature, Saavn Music automatically detected the speed of your network and selected an appropriate audio sampling rate to deliver your music (128 kbps for a high-speed network, and 16 kbps for a low-speed one).
Many of you told us that the quality of the downsampled rate was too low. You asked for higher quality and control over your bitrates, and now, Saavn is giving it to you.
We‘ve already flipped the switch so that the default downsampled bitrate is 32 kbps instead of 16 kbps – so you’ll see a significant improvement in quality on low-speed networks, without a sacrifice in streaming ability!
We’ll also be expanding the variable bitrate feature in the next release of Saavn Music, which rolls out this month. Here’s what you’ll see in the newest version of the Android app:
- Option to turn off network autodetect/bitrate autoselect
- Choice of four bitrates (128, 56, 32, or 16 kbps)
- Higher quality (32 kbps) default audio for slow networks
If you’re on a 2G (or EDGE) network, or on a busy 3G network, we recommend you keep auto-detect on. To all the users who wrote in and helped us make a better product, thank you. Keep it coming, and we’ll do the same!
Sridevi Kicks Butt
When you think girl power what comes to mind? Buffy The Vampire Slayer? Rosie The Riveter? Sridevi?
Recently I was browsing through youtube, a favorite hobby of mine, hoping to find some interesting videos – some how, don’t ask me how I entered the following search term, “Sridevi Fight Scenes.” So apparently in her hay-day Sri D. was a fighter. She threw down with worst villains imaginable. Here is a compilation of my favorites,
I think this proves it, Sri D was a very versatile actress. All Hail Mighty Sridevi! Protector of Women Everywhere!
And when she wasn’t out fighting evil doers she was seducing us with her charm in some jazzy Bollywood numbers, search Sridevi on www.saavn.com and see what you find!
My Android Goes Hmmm

Salaam, namaste! You may have noticed we’ve gone missing for a while, and that’s a good thing. We’ve rolled out some major product enhancements on Saavn.com and launched a partnership with Google.
But the really big news is…Saavn for Android is here! Saavn Music, our first native mobile app for Android, went live this month, and we are ecstatic about it – especially because it was built 100% in-house by the team here at Saavn (and because several of us are Android users ourselves).
Of course, the Saavn app is free in the Android Market™. And for paying nothing…you get everything! The Saavn app includes the full functionality of Saavn.com in just three simple tabs: Play, Browse, and Search.

The Saavn app for Android allows you to stream the hundreds of thousands of tracks in Saavn’s catalog (streaming perfectly over EDGE networks). Within the app, you can build, edit, and save playlists; sign into your Saavn.com account and access your existing playlists; browse the latest albums, weekly top 15, and featured playlists; or hit the “Kuch Bhi” (“Surprise Me”) button to start listening with a single click.
Saavn Music isn’t just the best app for Bollywood and South Asian music – it’s the best Search-and-Play music app, period and full stop. Download Saavn Music (free) from the Android Market™ and let us know what you think. Scan the code below using your barcode scanner or search for “Saavn” in the Market to get started.

And watch this space for news on the major improvements to Saavn coming in the next few weeks and months.
