The prestigious Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles started last night with a bang. The festival is taking place at the classy Arclight in Hollywood and celebrated it’s opening night Gala last night which honored none other than Mr. Millionaire himself Anil Kapoor. Looking absolutely dashing in his pin stripe suite and tie, Anil stopped and spoke to every single media outlet with grace and pride, discussing Bollywood, the films, being in LA, and of course the success of Slumdog Millionaire! He took the time to tell me about how excited he about the fusion that is taking place between Bollywood and Hollywood now and is optimistic that things will go far in this field. Sigh, I hope so Anil, then I can see more Bollywood celebrities walking amongst us commoners around the malls.

Anil Kapoor on the Red Carpet
The night started with a a screening of Anand Surapur’s The Fakir of Venice. Now I will be honest with you all, I missed the film in the name of Anil! A little too star struck to leave the red carpet, instead of watching the film I chose to follow the celebrity down the walk of cameras and microphones instead. Can you blame me? I mean 1942 a Love Story is still one of my favorite movies and will be comprising my wedding soundtrack. Not that I am engaged, but that is truly another story! I will be sure to check out other films this week and review them for your viewing pleasure to make up for my Bollywood selfishness.

Anil Kapoor and Reshma Dhawan on the Red Carpet at Iffla Opening Night
Finally, Anil left the premises and I could continue with my job of covering the film festival to it’s fullest potential! The Gala took place soon after which had a stunning performance by San Fransisco based dance company Project Pulse. The group completely wowed me with their energy especially by dancer Shiamak Patel who came right in front to get the audience going wild. Everything from jazz, hip hop, typical Bollywood, salsa, and modern dance styles were used through their choreography. For those of you who are into Bollywood for the love of the dance this group is truly something to look out for! I being a dancer myself can tell you the energy and passion with every single dancer is hard to find and they got it!

Stay tuned for more filmy talk throughout the week!
Great recap, Reshma. Keep the IFFLA coverage coming!
Oh, Anil!! He is such a sweetie! I’m so glad he is our ambassador from Bollywood rather than Amitabh. Anil’s more about the entertainment value and less about the politics.
This is great…you met Anil Kapoor! You’re so lucky to be in LA, there’s always something going on. Can’t wait to hear more about the film festival throughout the week. Too bad you missed out on Fakir in Venice because I’ve been wanting to watch that movie, Farhan Akhtar’s in it…love him!
